Domaine Preignes le Vieux Grain d`Automne 2006

Domaine Preignes le Vieux Grain d`Automne 2006

Tasting Note:

Caramelised tarte tatin notes, bright, fresh and well balanced depth of sweetness and length. An elegant, late harvest wine with an initial lush mouth-feel which gains elegance and intensity as it develops on the palate. There is plenty of oak with butterscotch and spice accents and an emergence of peach, citrus and mineral flavours.

Bottle Size:

A lovely wine, far more interesting than like-priced classic dessert wines from Bordeaux. 50cl bottle. The whole Domaine is part of a scheme called Qualenvi which means the Domaine is committed to not using pesticides or artificial fertilizers in the vineyards and is committed long term to sustainable agriculture. Viognier originates in the Rhone Valley, making the great wines of Condrieu and is ideally suited to these poor soils and warm Mediterranean climate

Typically Mediterranean climate, warm and sunny with a law rainfall. Winters are mild, summers are hot. Vines are ploughed and they do not use weedkiller. Pruning is short to regulate the vine’s growth and yields. Hand Harvested with a selective picking of botrytised grapes. Yield: 15 hl/ha

Bunches are left on the vine until late October/early November where the grapes are allowed to shrivel slightly so that the Viognier becomes rich and decadent. There is some botrytised (Noble Rot) effect 100% barrel fermented with skin maceration (the juice macerates on the skin before pressing). This gives colour and increases the aromatic potential and of the grape and the wine’s structure and ageing potential. Aged 8 months in new French oak.

Desserts, foie gras, blue cheese and it is absolutely brilliant with Tarte Tatin!
