BACKGROUND

Gérard was the son of a diplomat, who began life in England. Gérard Harmand started at the Domaine in Gevrey-Chambertin in the early 1990s. Gérard understands Burgundy’s terroir – his wines are a reflection of this. He treats the wine from each vineyard separately. Each plot is assessed then he lets the wine dictate the process. This is to achieve harmonious wines that deliver an expression of the land.

VINEYARD

This small Domaine owns some of the most prestigious vineuard land in the Commune of Gevrey, including the Grand Cru Mazis and parts of various 1er Cru Vineyards

WINEMAKING

Very traditional methods, limited oak use in this village wine, concentrating on the stony fruit and subtle depth and length. He treats the wine from each vineyard separately, constantly tasting to determine how much ‘pigeage’ is required, what sort of oak should be used, the ratio of new to used barrels and the length of barrel ageing before bottling.

Cotes de Nuits where the village of Gevrey lies is the home of Pinot Noir. Vineyards are small and production limited and world wide demand is high. Consequently, Red Burgundy is always expensive. Pinot Noir is difficult to grow and has transplanted only to equally limited growing areas around the New World, unlike Cabernet and Shiraz, it is very fussy where it is planted and the climate that it demands.

FOOD MATCHING
